I currently have a successful business in the UK, and want to duplicate by selling them into the USA, these products are in a niche area (toys/arts and craft/entertainment) and they are unique (our own designs). I would sell on my own e-commerce site. Products would be shipped from China directly to US, and I would use a fulfillment centre. Would using a sales tax free state work? Any draw backs to this. What are the main steps to selling my products into the US, would I have to register with any authorities and what does a ocean freight company require from me being a non US resident. Any advice and guidance welcome. Even a check list would be great and thanks!

You need to consider the implications to your Liability Insurance - speak to your broker/insurer BEFORE you do anything as it could be costly.

Noted you are looking for supplies to go straight from China to the USA - what quality control will you have in place - particularly for any toys (even more so if there are any electrical or battery operated items)!

In addition to what Frank says, you really do need to secure the services of a good US based accountant and a good US based trademark attorney.

Shipping to a sales tax free state may work, but US tax laws are changing all of the time so you will need to check this. Also, as you importing directly, depended on the size of the shipment, you may have to register with the authorities in order to get yourself a FEIN, which you will need to clear the goods. That in turn, will trigger filing responsibilities.

As I said, before you do anything undertake due dilligence. Ut really is a minefield. But if you can make it work, then it may be very lucrative.
