Self employment and the HMRC?

O

Can a sole trader who registered with HMRC months ago as self-employed, then wrote/telephoned to state they are no longer self-employed, become self-employed again whenever they wish? HMRC have alot of rules. May sound silly but I want to know, thanks in advance.

Yes thats fine, but you will still need to complete a tax return covering your period of self employment, and for later years if one is sent.

HMRC never really take you off being self employed!

Even if you leave self employment and go back to being employed, they still send and expect returns forms - in case you do anything 'on the side' It appears you are 'High Risk' of earning extra income if you have been self employed!

They shouldn't, and it's not done as a matter of course. If you fill in the tax form correctly and put the date of cessation of self employment they are quite good at picking this up and taking you off the self assessment list
