Second life

Am considering doing something with Second Life. Had a play around with it probably about a year ago , but not from a business persepctive. Anyone here using it ?

Not using it but have always been intrigued by it and willing to have a look.

If you got into it on a business front how would you expect to gain value from it?

We're currently looking into using Second Life but we're not sure how it's any different to the more typical social media marketing.

Had yesterday an interesting proposition from a University for collaboration in developing Video 3D, there is so much potential and it could the way forward the web design may lay in the future. There is an interesting conference in Amsterdam next month.

I understand Microsoft is also investing in the technology. Second Life can be used for Marketing and Testing for your Real Life business. More cannot say as it is in development.

I played around with it and I think I bought some land there ..... guess the housing market in the real world might have battered it a bit ! Not sure how I would use it for business...maybe open a store ?

Plan to find out a bit more and maybe see you guys in there ?

Use it for fun but I wouldn't recommend trying to gain business from it. With the hours (and days) you spend getting anywhere on Second Life you could make many, many, many times more sales by putting that time into other marketing methods.

I bet Second Life is good for some businesses in-terms of marketing but I think when it comes to your target market you won't get anywhere.

one of the advantages, is that potential customers can interact with new products before making a decision, also for e-learning is great. New functionalities in SL mean that any visitors will be able to chat or make free calls to a business in RL and make enquiries. 3D will be the next step for competitive ecommerce sites as well as being a virtual showroom designed exactly as in Real life.

I was a regular in Second Life for a good couple of years, I don't feel that it would be a great idea to market your business within second life - unless you produce products that you can sell to the community within SL.
I think that alot of the time you spend would not be productive (ie chit chat to the locals who are wondering what you are doing there and the fact that there are always new things to do and explore). I do not think this would help you to engage RL sales.
Alot of people in SL are there for a giggle - DJ's do well promoting themselves in SL it opens a new medium for them - but for a RL business to succedd it would be hard.
I knew some great people running businesses in SL and even they gave up as the RL / SL pressures become to much.
Half hour turns into three hours when your in SL!
