Hi everyone,

This is my first post, so be gentle.

I work away alot but it is very seasonal, busy in summer, then quite from November through to april/May time when im at home alot.

Ive been thinking about starting a business for a while now, but most things i think of would struggle with me been away.

i thought of web based businesses but would require big outlay to begin with.

So has any body got any ideas for a seasonal(winter) business.

my dream is to build up a business so i dont have to work away and then hopefully start employing a few people and earn a nice living.

You can't expect to have a business in which you are only there half the year - it just wouldn't work. You have to devote your full time to the business especially in the first couple of years.

Also you cannot just expect people to hand out good business ideas on a business forum, I can assure you any good ideas will not be passed on.

Theres no harm in having dreams, but in reality to fulfill them takes all of your devotion and commitment, not half of it.

well, why not learn to drive a wee minidigger type jcb and then hire one from the first day of snow until the thaw starts, drive around housing estates and offer to clear their driveway/street for £15 a house, should only take 15 mins per house, you'd coin it in - and if it snows the next day, just go back

you'd have made a fortune up here last month!!!

if you can't manage the digger, buy 500 snowshovels in the summer, you'll get them for about £5 each then, and in winter, just sell them for £20 each door to door

it's very seasonal - but simple to set up

or you could go to your local shopping centre and dress up as santa

Hi Mike

I didnt just want a half year business but a seasonal one does it what it says on the tin, busy in a season where I can do something about it, I am available through the summer but it can be very random, not certain of dates wen I will be, but winter is a different story, surely a little project to start with wont be that bad, then gradually build up the customer base.

thanks for the constructive reply, i like the santa idea but dont have the build for it(the belly) LOL.
Ive thought about them minidiggers before, the ones that could dig foundations for extensions, clear snow etc. Then if I get one of them I could maybe hire it out in the summer for a daily charge to small building firms.

whatever you do make sure you enjoy it, think of your hobbies etc! you will be better at it if you enjoy it.

some businesses that seem seasonal actually take up the full year with planning etc to make sure the execution is as good as possible as its only a small time window to sell or make the money.
