If you optimise a site for say 'Chartered Institute of Marketing' will the site also be optimised and be returned for a search using the keyword 'CIM'? or does this need to be targeted as a separate keyword?

This one's been puzzling me as it appears that some searches will highlight the shorter in bold when you have searched for the longer.

CIM appears to be a synonym for Chartered Institute of Marketing

So yes, you really only need to optimise for 'Chartered Institute of Marketing', though it might not hurt to have CIM somewhere e.g. a glossary.

That's what I suspected. I didn't want to build links to both if I can focus on one - two birds with one stone, so to speak.

I'd advise building links on a variation of anchor text - looks more natural. i.e. use CIM and 'Chartered Institute of Marketing'

That's the best way to go,make it look as natural as possible for the search engines. A little extra work, but you won't be thinking should i have done that in the future !
