Search for decent backup software

Hey folks,

Can you advice on back software that can do mirror, and also incremental aka backup only changes files plus ability to backup via ftp or even ssh. Ideally with pgp encryption :)

Thanks in advance,

Alex.

DesignerDrawings

Designer Drawings will develop this software for you if this is an alternative to purchasing a licensed copy of an existing application.

The advantages of this is that we can tailor to absolutely all of your needs. We can implement any feature and have it customized for your business, at a VERY low cost.

Any software we do develop specifically for businesses like yourselves will be unique and we will never sell it on to other companies.

Hope this helps

How important is the mirroring? It's really a different requirement to backup and I cannot think of a package that does both well and easily. You could look at:

Mirroring:
rsync
Unison
csync2

Backup:
rsync
rsnapshot
Backuppc

Whatever you choose, you *must* have a robust method of monitoring success/failure. rsync, for instance has 16 different exit codes that indicate an error, some of which matter and some of which don't.

My two-pence worth...

...when considering backup software think about the restore as well as the backup.

There's bucketloads of software out there that would meet all of your requirements, and YES it does take a faithful copy of your data. But very often the routines to go back the other way (especially if you need a full-disc restore, not just one lost file) are massively lacking.

When the crunch comes and you have a knackered hard disc you will really need to get yourself back up and running again QUICKLY. Not to be faffing about copying files from dated folder after dated folder, replacing older versions with newer versions, navigating up and down through directory trees...

I strongly recommend Roxio Retrospect which is a very very established program in the industry. I've been using it since 1992 and I swear by it ;-)

They do products for all ends of the market, from single-user businesses to enterprise-level. Windows & Mac or a mixed network of both.

Best wishes,

James

I have just written a BAT (batch) file.
That way there is no need for any special software to restore the files again, and with a mapped drive, it can copy the files to any location, whether local or networked.
The method I have used means it only copies files which are new, or have been altered to the ones it has already copied.
Best part is, its free! =)

Try Handy Backup (handybackup.net). It can do incremental backup, backup to ftp, pgp encryption and so on. It is easy to use, full featured, and useful backup software I've ever used.

Depending on what your exact requirements are then a few starting points would be...

Rynsc if your happy to configure it yourself, if your using a mac download the latest rsync or use Carbon Copy Cloner as Apples included revision is quite old.

Crashplan is a good Free (depending on how you configure it) or lo cost solutions (CrashPlan Pro Server) which offers de-duplication and offsite backups too.
The restoration method is easy and has an assured restore option which self heals archives and backup sets. Again this is crossplatform.

If you need granular or brick level Exchange backups or tape then their are other software solutions available.

If your really stuck or want some free advice drop me a PM.

just be careful with the --delete tag and rsynch

I lost a bit of work last week to that one doh

Probably no consolation to know that it could have been worse if you had rsync'd in the wrong direction from an empty directory using --delete.

I would not recommend rsync 'in the raw' to anyone that was not an experienced sysadmin or had the time and inclination to properly understand the many different modes of use and the 50 odd command options, some of which are dangerous.

Better to use one of the backup packages that use rsync as the transport but produce incremental backups with little risk. Backuppc is the best by a long chalk, rsnapshot being a simpler but very useful alternative.

I would suggest you to use R1soft CDP backup software. It's one of the best backup software, it takes the backup of entire HDD which can be restored easily in short span of time. A bit pricey though but when it comes to quality and performance, you will have to best of it.
