SDD vs SATA drives - thoughts please

Just in the process of creating a dev server - mainly for running windows 7 dev tools and Windows Server VMs.

It's been a while since I looked at the hard disk marketplace - what are your thoughts on using a SDD disk compared to a SATA 3 disk.

Reliability / speed etc

Always go SSD given that the prices are so slow now. Sub £150 i think for 512gb.

Reliability they are ahead of HDDs spinners, and speed is around 10 - 20 x faster and much better bust rates.

I understand James' views, but why would you spend £80 on a 2tb HDD for coding, when you will never need all that space for coding. An SSD with say PHP Storm is a beautiful thing.

I'd opt for SSD.
VM's (we are running VMWare's) run much faster, they boot within seconds and you can run several parallel without speed or transfer rate issues.
For coding the HDD SATA3 bandwidth is more than enough (nevertheless usually they under-perform in speed tests) while good SSD drives give you the specified speed both read and write.

Been away for a couple of days - thanks for the replies - being a tight @rse I opted for cheap HDD - £65 for a WD 2 TB 7500 rpm etc etc

I checked on the SDD - a bit pricey for less space (I guess that's the choice you make).

No doubt - I'll end up getting a SDD in the near future - and thus spending more in total than if I'd just gone for the SDD - story of my life......

Always best to shop around, Mushkin SSD's are pretty cheap and perform on par with Kingston.

Looking at around £65 for a 120 SSD
£90 roughly for a 240gb

Personally i like the new Hybrid drives that are coming out - Can get western digital 1TB hdd + 120gb SSD for around 150 although the RPM is only 5400 RPM.

Personally i got a 120SSD for my boot drive (C:Drive) and a couple of 1 TBs (not in raid) for storage etc.

Send over a PM if your ever looking for anything I'm always up for sending out a good bargain ;)
