I doubt its much coming from Scoot, AskAlix traffic may be better, dont know much about results from Touch I'm afraid.
Some background on who Scoot are:
Ask Alix was a 20'000 a month directory in 2005ish, this was owned by Enable Media, who owned Scoot. Ask Alix sold search data feeds to various partners for £2000 a time (My company had dealings with them a few years back) and operated a network of partner sites displaying their results.
Ask Alix had a relationship with Dun & Bradstreet. EnableMedia were purchased by Touch Local. Okay, their a big publisher, and £150 is a bit expensive, but what traffic does it send per month now.....
I'd pay £50 for a listing on Touch, and £20 on AskAlix for 12 months.
SCOOT and YELL do not work for the money it costs. They are a directory within the largest directory of them all, Google ( okay like a directory ).
spend your hard earned cash on proper seo ( on site and off site ).
any seo pro worth anything can outrank a yell or scoot subdomain
If what you say is true, and I suspect it is, which means its fairly easy - and we all know how many SEO's there are....... so seems any SEO effect is reduced, for decent SEO can then outrank you just as easily as you outranked them.
At least with strong links behind you, it gives a traffic foothold, which cannot be broken as easily or quickly as SEO. Cheaper to buy 50 targeted links than SEO for £5k.
