Sample products for goody bags

I am in the process of making goody bags which will be targeted at specific demographics. I want to approach big consumer companies such as P&G, Unilever etc.. to provide samples for this bag. I would be looking for things like toothpaste, small packs of washing up powder etc..

Unfortunately I have no idea as to how much these companies would be willing to pay. I imagine that if I could get (say) 100k samples of toothpaste and allow them to put a money off coupon in the bag as well, they should pay me some form of placement/distribution fee. Can anyone give me an idea (or where I can find out more info?)

Hi drdes,

Your question is very broad, in order to get this slightly more clear I would suggest answer the following questions:

1) Who are you going to be distributing to?
2) Do you have any proven track record?
3) Why is what you are doing better than anyone else?
4) What sort of return will they see?

Especially question 4, once you work this out, you can then work it backwards as to what it is worth to P&G / Unilever going forward, bearing in mind future revenue as well.

Going direct may not have the desired effect, given that almost all the major consumer brands work with advertising agencies, so it might be better to approach some of the larger agencies to test your idea (such as grey.com who handle the P&G account).

But I suspect that your ideas may not reach their targets, they are a worldwide brand and 100K is a small number in their world, visit almost any maternity ward in the country and you will find they give out samples of pampers, probably reaching 100K without having to pay too much.

thats an interesting angle - however how can i avoid the risk that they (e.g. grey in your example) just steal my idea and do it themselves if they like it!

It may be an angle they might consider, but not for every client, thereby making it too expensive, but if you are combining several items (from different clients and agencies) it would be cost effective....or could be depending on your business model.
