My Girlfriends daughter bought a salon with existing staff. We are not happy with the way the salon is moving forward. For one we want to change the clientele from older clients to a more younger one.Staff at the moment are set in their ways and are not flexible at all ith hours of work.My question is simple.....how can we legally dispose kf their services?..Not only are they very negative towards change they have mentally been bullying.

This is all a very complicated situation. When you buy a business with existing staff, you are supposed to retain them as per their current terms and conditions, using the TUPE process (google it). If this is the case disposing of staff would need to be above board, i.e fired for legitimate reasons, or made redundant (which will cost £).

HOWEVER, I am led to believe that a lot of the hairdressing/beauty industry runs on a quasi-self employed 'chair rental' system, so it could be as simple as finding out how they are employed, and then telling them their chairs are no longer available for rent, and then get yourself some new young, fresh and hungry 'go getter' type staff.

Really depends on the circumstances.

they are all employed.....all due redundancy but both awquard and set in their ways.I thought if i changed the hours, with notice and with legitimate reasons that would be fine

You need to be careful you are not setting yourself down a path for constructive dismissal. I would personally ring ACAS, explain the situation and see how they can advise you. By the sounds of things they have been with the company a number of years and are possibly over 41 years old, and so would be due a fair chunk of cash for redundancy?

Of course, if you're going for a complete shift in direction, then you could potentially just close down the entire LTD company and start afresh? I would get some legal advise on this though. It would be harsh, but if they are bullying your daughter then perhaps they deserve it? #devilsadvocate

I'm being positive about this right now and I will be honest, so please do not take offence. There are details you have missed out for us to answer.

Firstly, how recently is recent? week, month a year? What prompted the original owner to sell it your girlfriends daughter? Was she employed there originally?

Secondly, what experience does she have of running a business, other than your help? I would challenge your current thoughts of dismissal, unless you have an army of hairdressers waiting to take over these positions.

Thirdly, I would suggest an immediate meeting of everyone in the salon to discuss and invite suggestions on how you can all move forward. Not knowing anything about the previous set up we can only summise that the environment was quite relaxed and you've all come in to make into a business, hence the negativity and the current working practice.

If you continue to look for ways of dismissal this is more likely to have an immediate negative effect on the salon and the business. As youre aware it is a gossip led environment, and nothing other salon's like more is gossip. The business will suffer financially from both unemployment rights and costs of employing.Do yo have a budget for that?

Finally, by coming across being fair and approachable the conditions can be implemented at a gradual pace without them even realising that they have been working that way for a while. If they want to stay, they'll stay, if they want to go then let them, but let them go because of the reasons they decide not what you change.

Chair rental is also common way of working in salon's these day's. A full salon of all age groups is better than an empty one.

A perfect example, I have a regular hairdresser and I couldnt get to him on one occassion, I walked the entire local high street early one morning because I was going to a wedding that day. One I sat in didnt have any change and he walked out to get change and left us all sat there alone. The next one I walked into was empty and two girls filing their nails, they couldnt do me because they were busy......REALLY. How long would it have taken to give me a trim with 10 empty chairs.
