Hello,

I am in a bit of dilemma to choose the right online gateway provider for payments.
Spoke to three of them Sage Pay , World Pay and Paypal.

Could you anyone share their experience and help me to choose between the three biggies

Sage Pay or World Pay or Paypal.

Thanks,
Wajid

Hi Wajid,

Are you able to share roughly how many transactions per month you're expecting to process and what amounts on average? If you're doing more than £2000 or so you can generally save money by getting your own merchant account.

As ryedale mentioned, whichever you go for, you may want to offer PayPal as a secondary option for customers who prefer that.

I had a good experience with both PayPal and Stripe, but as already said above it also depends on the number of transactions you're expecting, some providers or plans might be cheaper or cost efficient depending on the quantity you're forecasting.

Depends on volume, but I've really liked paypal, they are easy to integrate, and the transaction process is very easy! We have used paypal from the start, and never had a problem with them. You can always offer the option for people to chose how they want to pay (e.g through paypal/ world pay or even bitcoin) and see which is preferred.

Always offer PayPal with another payment processor, probably doesn't matter which one. Personally the last time i paid for something via worldpay i thought the payment screen looked very old and dated. Stripe seems very popular here and you don't have to have a merchant account plus as far as a customer it looks like a normal payment provider. Just see what works out the cheapest for you. Make sure you add in all costs such as monthly account fees from both the payment processor and the merchant bank account, transaction charges with different card types, refunds, chargeback costs and PCI certificate management. The only other thing to consider is how quick do you want your money some hold on to it for quite a while.

I will second Granulr and agree with bharris with offering PayPal as a second option.
The Worldpay payment screen is very customisable (Not very hard to do). If you just go with there standard one, then yes it does look basic.
I could never recommend SagePay due to my personal experience with them and the attitude of their staff.

I've used Sagepay and Paypal. Never had any issues apart from one time where Sagepay wouldn't respond for an hour or two and got an email from Sagepay about it. Other than that no issue. Customer support has been good, but on the phone it can vary between a few minutes and 45 minutes waiting time!

And also, I think it's always good to offer Paypal alongside another payment gateway for most e-commerce websites.

I use Sagepay and Paypal. Both have been fine. Few times I've called Sagepay I've got through fast and got the support I needed. The larger the company, the more negatives you will hear about them. I can't vouch for the others but you might hear great things about the new kid in town only for it to sour when they take on more than they can handle.

I would personally take that with a pinch of salt. I'm not sure how they could do that.
Also, depending on how much you put through Worldpay, it may be worth joining the FSB. Worldpay give you better rates on the card fees and the gateway if your a member along with a lot of other benefits.

Worldpay and Sagepay are simply payment gateways. As long as your software supports them, they are much of a muchness.

What you want to look at is the Internet Merchant Account. Both companies offer packages that include the gateway and the merchant account, but you do not have to use theirs. Shop around and you may well get a better deal - we use Worldpay as our gateway, but our merchant account comes from Lloyds.

We offer Paypal as a separate option - and I know for a fact that we get customers because we have it while our competitors don't.

You can often find better deals when you look at independent Gateways and merchant account providers separately (as japancool has pointed out). Smaller/independent companies offering Payment Gateway services can offer lower pricing and better customer service in some respects as they are able to spend more time assisting customers and will often go the extra mile to help.

Being independent is definitely the way forward, you may find the term 'agnostic' used in its stead. Couple of quick benefits of independence:

    1) Prices can be competed across acquirers, especially acquirers that recognise the gateway as an independent and well-connected source of referrals. The non-committal relationship garners preferential rates. It may be that independent gateways carry a Price Guarantee too.

    2) An independent gateway can offer an alternative merchant account (indirectly) if your original were to expire, whilst not sacrificing the gateway usage. This can be retained.

It is entirely possible to reach out without the use of a referring gateway but the acquirers make the assumption you aren't as experienced and could offer you higher rates. I know a few Cardstream merchants use multiple gateways, so it's not inconceivable to use multiple gateways or merchant accounts.

But if you're a start-up or near a lower parameter of SME, then having two gateways is double the monthly tariff potentially.

In order to offer meaningful guidance any provider will need the following information:-

    What are you selling ?

How much do you think you will transact a month ?

What shopping cart are you using ( gateway compatibility) ?

How old is your Business ?

Once you answer these points you can then start looking around, for example we specialise in High Risk and Start Up Business with the gateways starting at £ 10 PCM, but you would need to be trading at least £ 500 - 700 PCM to make it worth your while to use a conventional merchant account and gateway.

Also echo idea of having PayPal as alternative to your primary processor.. a lot of customers will still only use PayPal..

PM me if you would like any further info..
