SaaS development hosting

Hi there

I'm currently working on a SaaS project.

Without going into too much detail, it is a Report sevice where users will enter data from their mobile device, upload the data to a server where the data is saved and used to create a pdf report online.

I'm using Rails for the back-end and I would like some information regarding cheap, pay monthly (I don't want to be tied to an annual contract at this stage) hosting for this kind of service. It's just for development requirements at the moment, no requirements for heavy traffic at present. I want to be able to demonstrate the service at various stages of development, to my client, hence the need for a publicly accessible hosting service.

If any one has experience with hosts or can help me further with this issue I would be very grateful.

Regards
Michael

Cloud can be a good option for you with pay-per-use which would keep the cost low. How much are you willing to pay for this? Based on which you can shortlist what is suitable for you.

You can go with VPS hosting to start with , go for monthly hosting package. You can take a look at : http://www.webhost.uk.net/linuxvps.html

Thanks for your recommendation, I would certainly consider when we're in a position to publicly deploy our web app.

For now I have been looking into the limited Free EC2 option from Amazon as it looks like it may be sufficient for my development and testing needs.

Does anyone have any experience using this (good or bad) and do you think this would be a viable option while in the devlopment phase.

despite the hype and marketing over how resilient and scalable cloud servers and VPS's are, don't be fooled, there's still an underlying platform that can go wrong - i have a client who uses Fasthosts who experienced an outage yesterday across their entire cluster.

At the risk of a shameless plug, we do dedicated boxes from £20-£25/month:

    • Xeon® Processor 3.00E GHz, 2M Cache, 800 MHz FSB
    • 4GB RAM
    • 80GB 7,200rpm Hard Drive
    • CentOS 32bit or 64bit
    • 5,000GB Bandwidth/Month
    • Dedicated (Unmetered) 100Mbit Port

that will out perform most VPS as you're not sharing resources, you then retain an element of control over the platform and what you're physically running on, and can upgrade RAM, hard disk space, or even to your own public or private cloud set up as and when you need to.

Drop me a pm or a call if you do fancy a chat.
