Having done this myself for the last 12 months, until I sold my vehicle, I feel I have a little insight into it.
The biggest problem I found was going out and quoting, especially big piles of rubbish, because you could never tell what was at the bottom!.
Try to avoid builders etc, there is always lots of weight with builders waste, old half bricks and half bags of cement etc. They always weigh in more than you think.Tiles are a no-no too, floor tiles weigh loads!
General household waste is the route to go down, you know the clutter that everyone has somewhere, old beds, bikes, lawnmowers, crap from the shed/garage. Much more profitable. I realised quite early on that people are much more inclined to pay for something they are clearing to make space for something, like the garage because they have a new car and are excited about it or the shed because they are making it into a room for the garden etc, waste when it is a by product of something else like a house refurb, becomes just another expense in the cost-cutting scheme of things and people don't like paying for it!
Most people have no idea of the cost of disposing of waste legally so it almost always comes as a shock to them. You can spend an awful lot of time driving around quoting and not actually earning.
The trick here is to be professional, look professional and you will convert 85 percent of the quotes.I had a uniform, sign written bright yellow caged van, 0800 number and website :
www.tipandskip.co.uk.
Always remember there is a minimum charge, for me it was 35.00 quid, the tip charged 25.00. Most days I always 2 or 3 jobs, but the punters didn't know that, why should they?
Another little tip when quoting to save loads of time driving about, is get them to text or email good quality photos, with some perspective to enable you gauge the waste, people like the idea of that because they don't have to feel intimidated by a scruffy bloke banging on their door and it adds to the image.
Loads of things to know and learn, but do it right to start with and you will be okay.
Regards Will
