Risking It All is back on Ch 4 tonight at 8pm - if you haven't seen this before it's worth watching.

From www.tvguide.co.uk:

"Martin Webb advises childhood sweethearts James and Kate Cotty as they start up a design shop in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, stocking furniture, artwork and jewellery. The couple have no retail experience and have never spent time working together, yet have sold everything they own to finance the new venture - which means moving in with Kate's mother."

That sounds interesting, espcially as Lyndhurst is very local to me.

I have been following this series since it started a couple of weeks a go and was amazed with how blind some people are when they enter into business, considering they often put their life savings into it.

The last two weeks have focused on restaurants so it's good to have a change of scene.

Unfortunately, this is exactly why I can't bring myself to watch it.

The TV company have managed to find a raft of totally clueless people who dream (and little else) of being in business, just to show the coach-potato world another story of actual, painful or barely-avoided failure.

I for one would be more inclined to watch if they showed a success story or four and clearly spelled out what they did right, not just what not to do.

Perhaps the old motto should be changed to 'Those who can, do - Those who can't, watch it or appear on TV'? :(

I think you're right- it's not aimed at business people at all but it does have some kind of morbid fascination.

Sadly, I missed last nights episode in the end.

wow  they really had absoloutely no idea at all did they.

"I want a Ferrari in 5 months" no you dont you need a slap

You are so right, he really did seem clueless. His partner looked rather at her wits' end, which frankly wasn't that far.

I know they edit these shows to demonstrate the worst possible scenarios but he was so stuck on his own taste without realising that he couldn't even afford to buy it himself so how could he expect anyone else to?

Also when you are given the advice by someone with a proven track record in your area you don't throw it back at them. They wouldn't ignore the advice if they had to pay a proper consulting fee.

Mind you, I tell my kids stuff all the time and they don't take a blind bit of notice until they actually do burn themselves so it is probably the same principle.

I was very interested in the mark up they had on some of their paintings!

Buy for about £100 and sell for around £350?

Is that usual?

It just seemed like we were dealing with a 10 year old boy in a 28 year old's body. His wife look very scruffy, even when serving in the shop and didn't seem to have any spark of life or interest in all in what they were doing.

It also seemed a bit pointless for Martin Webb, the entrepeneur, to issue dire warnings about the importance of location and the wisdom of paying a higher rent for it, only then to easily 'fix' the problem with a wider range of stock and an aggressive marketing campaign.

She certainly didn't seem like the sort of wife you'd see in a Ferrari.

I'm sure that once he has learned a few lessons they could make a go of that shop but he needs to read 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' before he goes off and spends money he doesn't have on luxury items he doesn't need.
