Review of SEO SpyGlass by Link-Assistant

This tool is frequently mentioned on the forum, often with members asking is it any good or better than others.

Since they rolled out their own index for sourcing backlink data and prospective link opportunities, Eric Covino has reviewed the tool over at SEO Book - I thought it would be of interest to many on here.

In the few brief encounters I have experienced with the software since testing it out since they lost access to Yahoo Site Explorer (as this is where they previously sourced their data from), I have found it close to useless - but that's just my opinion.

So what is the best free tool I if any ) for checking backlinks of competitors

Personally i like it and use the free version quite alot. Still not sure of the best place to go now yahoo site explorer has been killed off. Anyone got any ideas on this? I know SEO Moz have a tool available

Personally, on a like for like match comparison to YSE in the UK, I would probably recommend Majestic SEO currently. We're working on a free tool that will use our own web index to display backlinks in the same way YSE did too.

There are some alternatives:-

Blekko (recently received $30M funding from Yandex)
Open Site Explorer (run by SEOmoz, a respected, trusted and maintained source)
QBL (Quick Backlinks) (launched as a direct replacement to YSE by LinkResearchTools / Cemper)
