Yesterday I received a message from a member, and on trying to reply I see 'This conversation is closed for new replies.'

Is that because I'm a new member, or is there a preference I need to change?

Please and thanks.

Hi Heyes

Thanks for reaching out.

I've had a look at the conversation you're referring to in the database.

The conversation was locked by the other participant which meant that you couldn't reply to it.

You ought to be able to start a new conversation with the member if you wanted to reply. My hunch is that the member didn't mean to lock the conversation, to begin with.

Personally I never trust anyone who tries to sell their services via PM where it can't be seen by everyone else as I always presume that they have something to hide
I agree by being an active member here you don't need to sale by DM

Not always true fellas, I've just had a website built by an established member on here, he approached me via DM, he is very particular about the projects and clients he takes on, he doesn't want to tout for the work.

I'm very similar in some respects, I tout for work, not on here of course, then I turn a lot of it away often for what may seem like the smallest of reasons.

He did a first class job with my website, but he doesn't want me to tell anyone about it.

Don't be so quick to dismiss people approaching you privately, they may have their reasons.

I don't have a problem with such messages, though my reaction very much depends on the quality of the approach and the person making it.

I'm usually as unenthusiastic about such messages as I am about stuff arriving by email or posted through my front door... 'it'd better be good' - though often it isn't and is summarily rejected.

Often, I'll find a service and provider I consider to be more appropriate elsewhere... they've 'made themselves interesting' - perhaps by contributing to a forum, having a good website, and are organised.

In the case of the message I received, none of the above was the case... they'd not contributed to the thread in which they'd seen me, their profile contained minimal information with no link, and a web-search revealed various directory-type listings all of which went to an expired domain.

So.... 'yeah right, of course I'm going to buy what you're selling'. Not.

I totally agree, don't be so quick to dismiss others approaching you, an opportunity doesn't stay around for long...
