Removing unwanted thanks

C

Consistency

I have never really thought of such a thing but I thank people loads of times, it is not personal I look at the comment and if I agree with it or it makes me laugh or is useful I will thank them.

If my or anyone else thanking you offends you then maybe there should be something that tells us, "this person does not want your thanks - thanks". Seems a bit silly to me in fairness.

The thing is there are a lot (some) of adults on this forum that are capable of having a heated debate and disagreeing. Then on another thread find themselves agreeing, being adults no grudges are held and you will get thanks. It how grown ups do things, particularly if you run a business.

Of course there are also a lot of kids, inexperienced and non-business people as well that are not capable of the thinking in this way.

I think I am going to try and find who does not like me and then thank them?

If you don't like me thank me and I will thank you back!

This is the closest I am going to get with the facebook type thing but then how will someone know that I am thanking them becuase I don't like them or they don't like me or because I like agree with or find useful their post.

I am confused myself now.............

How strange!

I have got 3 thanks but how do I find out who thanked me and why? I have only just started being a thanker so if I haven't thanked anyone I should have thanked then please let me know.

Everything I say was right in my head at the time of saying it so I think I should get a few thanks for that so if you could find all my posts and thank me that will make me look supercool and then people might think I am popular and start to like me and then I can ..................

Ooooh

Makes me chuckle really. I'll thank people for good advice even if I don't like the individual because the thanks system is supposed to be about the post not the poster.

Amazing how many don't though. "I don't like xxx so no way is he getting thanks. Even if he makes me a million quid from his advice it's not happening. Because!"

The thanks "system" was never meant to be a popularity contast.

I suppose it is a sign of life and a tragic serious fault with one of the things that is wrong with society, "I don't like the look of that particular person so I am not going to thank them even if they let me through the door", which leads on to "I was not thanked the last time I let someone through the door so I am not going to thank someone who lets me through". And I think in this case "I don't want to be seen to be thanked by a particular person as my views are different and do not want to be seen as having the same viewpoint as someone else"

Simply tragic.

I have given and received thanks votes from people who I do not particularly see eye to eye with, or have maybe had a discussion about moderating with. For me it matters not. If I consider a post worthy of thanks, it gets it. I thank on the basis of the quality of the content.

I think thanking people is very polite, especially if they have told you a funny joke.

I think some people just thank their cybermates though and quite often just to create a hostile environment for others. It's a bit like ganging up in the playground. Some of the bullies actually like the person being bullied but daren't let that be seen for fear of being bullied themselves.

Thanking people and befriending people on forums is just silly really but not as silly as liking things and poking people.

Anyway Mobyme, if I were you I wouldn't want thanking in a sarcastic smart ass manner but just be bigger than them and let it go.

It seems ridiculous to me that there is a facility to add or remove thanks and yet no facility not to receive thanks from those who you would prefer not to receive it from.

What's so strange about wanting not to receive thanks if you hold a certain person or their views generally in utter contempt. I would go so far as to say that to do so is totally hypocritical.

This was a simple request to find out if it was possible not to receive thanks. There isn't so that's the end of it.

Is it that terrifying a thought that someone you hold in contempt might actually think you have a good point?

I'd actually not think one bad thing about that.

Yes; if I don't like someone I prefer to tell them to stick their thanks where the sun don't shine. It's a strange person to my mind who thinks a system whereby someone can give or take away thanks, but the recipient has no say in it, is adequate or normal.

It's no different than being given an award by an organisation and refusing to accept it on the grounds that the organisation stinks; which I have done.

Fair enough. I do think that's the glass half empty approach though. If someone who I don't like gives me a thanks I look at it as a little victory.

As OWG does (and heaven knows WE don't always agree) I also judge the post on the merits of the post. Not the poster.

Just because I don't like someone doesn't mean they can't write common sense, or equally that they can't see the common sense in what I'm writing.

If you pardon my expression here Moby, I think it's a little petty Sir.

A bit of a shot in the dark and I may well be a long way off - would it help Mobyme, if I stopped thanking you and removed all my thanks whenever I spot them that I have given to yourself?

I can't imagine anyone not liking me but I suppose there will always be one! :D :D :D

If it's not me then maybe a few others could give the offer until we get to the bottom of who is causing such offence...................:p

You think it's petty, I think it's important. It's actually the system that is at fault because if the facility was there to remove any unwanted thanks in the same way that the person who gives the thanks can, nobody would any the wiser accept the individuals concerned.

That was the reason for the original post, nothing more; however it appears given the indignation it seems to have aroused, that there are a few people who cannot contemplate the possibility of rejection.

If someone thanks you and you don't want it, as you would tell an organisation that you do not want their award and why, why not tell the thanker that you don't want their thanks?

If anyone does not want mine, I will do my best not to thank them if I remember but I think it terribly daft and especially as grown ups have a falling out for a few days over disagreements on one topic but are best friends a few later when agreeing completely on another.

Well I assume that you're referring to other people because I'm neither expressing indignation nor am I scared of rejection.

I wasn't referring to you at all however I'm quite interested in why you decided to respond to the post now that you mention it.

If I was to see a similar post and I knew how it could be done, I would simply respond by saying you do so and so, if I knew in my experience it couldn't be done I may have responded with "I would like to know how to do this as well"; what I can't see me doing is questioning the persons motives or alluding to any other circumstances especially with regard to business.

So now you have me wondering about what made you respond; nothing personal, just genuinely interested.

I don't know about spaceships, but I for one thought it to be a very churlish question and was curious as to what the reasons behind asking such a question were.

A very strange request to find on a business forum.

I just looked at Moby's last few posts and thanks and took an educated guess at which one naffed him off. Give him a break guys it isn't churlish at all. It is a business forum but sometimes it gets very childish and spiteful.

Flippin heck I thought I was pretty "above board" in the way I replied. Some people are way too sensitive if they view this as childish and spiteful.

People were standing up for themselves in the face of what was seen as a pretty childish thread (well i can speak for myself at any rate) and it's gone the way a lot of threads do on here where people who try to get some sensible reasoning are shouted down and popped at.

Dic that might be your opinion but you should take a piece of your own advice before trying to shut people up who don't agree with you.

Moby you know my thoughts, no need to get so defensive.

FFS.....

Sorry but I'm still struggling with the concept that it is churlish not to want to receive thanks from someone for whom you have no respect and whose posts reflect the very antithesis of the way you live your life. It is no different to refusing to shake their hand if you met in public.

But that wasn't the point of my post, it was a simple request asking if someone knew of a way of removing unwanted thanks thus keeping my personal opinions private.

Hey - Chill dude. I wasn't saying this thread was childish and spiteful or any of its posters.

... and I would never try to shut anyone up. I love a mass debate me.

Any thanks going spare I will have them:D

After all, what does it really matter - very few of us are actually on real speaking terms - it is just a courtesy feature.

I kind of think the thanks system is like voting, only with the thanks system you know what you are getting - rather than, what you hope you might be getting when you vote.

In the great debate on life - hardly that important - is it?:|
