Removing Labels

Ok this may be a stupid question but the way everything is regulated these days I thought it best to check.
I want to sell wine with personalised labels. But are there laws against removing wine labels and selling them on with new labels? I wouldn't be claiming that I made the wine only personalised things like "John and Janes Wedding" or what have you.

Thanks

Rebranding has been going on for ages. There are plenty of laws preventing you selling your brand as a well known one - as in passing off, but I've never heard of any problems with taking the well known name off and then selling it as something else? In essence you're using it as a component of a new product - it would be interesting for an expert to confirm this as fact

Ive looked at unlabeled wines, I've only found one company that does it but they don't export to the UK. And I can't really buy them from the source at the moment because I can't afford to buy in large quantities.

I would guess that provided it is for a private function and not displaying for general retail sale, that it would be OK. I presume, if anyone bothered to ask, you would have documented that you told the customers what they were buying and not attempted to pass off cava as champagne. If there is any legal requirement on alcohol bottle labelling (like alcohol content etc) then you must naturally do that on the re-labels.

Providing that you comply with the relevant food/drink/alcohol labelling laws, then the only other thing I can think of is anything is the seller's terms and conditions which might ban resale except in the same packaging/labelling.

We are one of the leading providers of personalised wine, so advice from the experts! Some suppliers will object to the sale of their product without their full branding being in place and threaten legal action, others aren't bothered. Always best to ask first. And of course any labelling you apply must meet EU wine labelling laws.

Removing labels can be a real pain with modern adhesives, so we import without labels. Contact me, we might be able to offer you some unlabelled stock.

Most importantly, you need to hold a licence to sell alcohol to the public.
