Hi,

Could anyone briefly explain what 'cloud' file storage is? Its always a problem when we go away and need to access files etc and was wondering if this type of storage would be suitable for us... or any other recommendations?

Thanks

lol, just happened to see this pop into my email box, and thought I'd respond, as I'm at the computer at the moment. In simple terms, 'cloud' storage is where you 'employ' (if I can get away with using that word) an outside/external company to store or 'host' your files/documents for you so that you can have access to them at any time. One example being Dropbox. Hope this makes it clearer for you. Not sure if that was the simplest explanation, if not, I'll watch this space.....

Hi,
Cloud file storage is simply a server running on a highly redundant platform should any hard drives fail - the platform spins up a new server as all data is constantly being backed up to the SAN storage. You can read more on this here. This data could also be stored on a dedicated server - it really depends on your requirements i.e. resources you require, the level of redundancy and the number of users who will be accessing this simultaneously

It can be fairly expensive to create your own customised solution (depending on the resources you require) but like everything in life - you get what you pay for. It is a highly reliable/redundant platform and can be customised to your needs. By the sounds of things though your requirements are fairly small so it is up to yourself if you wish to look for a free solution (such as Dropbox which Mal mentioned above) - [https://www.dropbox.com/en/] or you could look at getting your own platform that will be housed in a data centre.

@hunny - hi i have PM you, but you could use SharePoint Document Libary which could be accessed from tablet or PC, but they are some good cloud storage options out there, like some people have said Dropbox or Box.net

We provide cloud storage to our existing customers using different technologies so we know how you feel as some customers were the same.

Hi

Take a look at Microsoft's One Drive. It's free, it has 7GB of storage, you can load the synchronisation app onto any Android or iPad device as well as MS devices. And, you get the cloud based office suite thrown in.
Just Google one drive to get all the details.

Dropbox is brilliant

We run all our files directly from it

It's worth paying a couple of extra quid a month for their unlimited deletion facility as well which means you will always have a copy of every file ever stored if you need to restore it
