Relocation

Hello All,

The powers that be want to relocate the office.

There are mobility clauses in the contracts of employment which permit relocating.

It appears that the decision has been made. However, we are now having individual meetings with the interim CEO to consult.

Whilst the majority have one to one meetings with the CEO and HR, there is a small group that forms a bit of a clique with the CEO and they will be having their meetings together.

I just wondered if:
a) The consultations should have been conducted prior to making the decision?
b) if it is a fair process given that the process is not the same for every employee?

Thanks in advance.

This is a forum for business owners to discuss issues with other business owners. May I suggest that you raise this issue with your trade union or with ACAS or Citizens' Advice.

    Hi Newchodge,

I was a long-term contributor on this website, helping numerous other business owners.

I have not contributed to the forum in just over a year due to personal issues (family deaths and cancer), but intended on contributing again when my personal life permits.

Whilst I am now in employment, I would have appreciated some help given my past help to other forum members.

If that's how the forum now operates, then fair enough. I will slope back off into the shadows.

It's not a question of what you can do, simply that responses you get are likely to loaded in favour of the employer over the employee.

I'd imagine you'll get more sympathetic, employee-focused responses elsewhere

I'm wanting the view from the employer, not the employee. Hence posting here.

    It is basically this ^^

As a long-term member you'll understand this site is geared for and to support the business owners, and quite often we would get employees join to grumble about their employers and ask advice on how to 'challenge' their employers. Then not get the answers they wanted to hear and we'd then have to moderate those threads, etc.

So I did take the position that if someone comes to this site seeking employment advice from the position of the employee we direct them to sources better suited to their position and close the thread. There are plenty of sources that help the employees but there aren't many sources that help the employer, bit one-sided IMHO.

Having explained the above, will leave this thread up so if anyone is able to give some input then thank you for your service 😉

In my view and having dealt with hundreds of candidates looking for anew jobs due to their old relocating when i was in recruitment.

The mobility clause in the contract pretty much trumps everything - what exactly does it say with regard to location and how far is the office moving?

There can sometimes be a case to say your role has actually been made redundant in it's current location and thus the correct procedure for that should be/have been followed (@Newchodge likely best to comment on that)

There is now a right to request flexible working as well which covers location of job/remote working if that fits with your job (but not a right to be given it, the employer can still say no but has to be for a valid listed reason)

    See https://www.gov.uk/flexible-working
