Relationship of keywords and content

Putting visitors aside, If i drop in keyword phrases that doesn't specifically match the actual content on my site, as far as SE's goes, would i be penalised for doing so?

Just did similar response to another seo query. If your page and keywords don't match google and searchers will not like it.

Lack of Landing Page Keyword Optimisation is one of the main reasons people are being google slapped.

Searchers must feel your message is very clear and speaks directly to the problem posed in their search query.

Landing page must be focussed around a series of highly related keywords

Needs to be a good level of keyword density to make google happy

Removed unnecessary waffle

No its not a scam.
The major problem i'm having, is that i am in the mother of all competitive keywords, although my product is unique within that market.
So much so, nobody will be doing a search for it, as nobody knows it exists.
Therefore my content which is in the nets most competive market, i maybe forced to use keyword phrases (and the lesser searched ones) of that market to try and drive traffic to my site. Even tho the keyword phrases don't specifically match my core product

Long tail - include the mother keywords combined with what you think the common phrases will be for people who might buy your product.
You're not going to get on the radar for the mother keywords you're thinking of but could do for some of the less obvious terms.

So - Car Insurance - no chance
That new kind of car insurance that nobody has even heard of yet - very good chance

and thats it, forced to use the lesser more obscure keyword phrases! phrases that don't specifically match my core product. If i do get to the top of the tree, will i get a hiding for doing so.
It seems to me, what is the point in trying to pander to the almighty God. Its not about relevance or content is king, its about how much money you can throw at it. were is the value in that
