Registering for VAT after business has started...

Hi,

This must be answered elsewhere but maybe I'm searching for the wrong terms and can't find it...

I have started a retail shop and am one month in. If I get to, say, month 10 and need to register for VAT (hit the threshold) what can I claim back and what do I have to pay VAT on? And does the situation change in the second year?

For example, obviously I paid a lot in rent, bond and fitting the shop which it would be nice to claim back but can I not claim that back if I don't register straight away?

Thanks,
M

Any sales which are subject to VAT from the date of VAT registration.
