Hi guys,

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question. I am in the process of starting-up my sole-trader business.
I went to the HRMC website to register as self-employed, however to register for their online services you need a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), but as far as I know you are only given one of these if you are already registered as self-employed.

So does this basically mean I cant do it all online and I need to send the form in by post, then get a UTR, and then I can use their online services?

regards,

Andy

Information you'll need before you register

You will need:

  • Your National Insurance number. In most cases you'll already have this, but if you haven't worked in the United Kingdom before you'll need to get one.
  • Your contact details and the contact details of your business, if you've started self-employment.
  • Your ten-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference number if you have previously completed a Self Assessment return. You'll find this on letters or forms sent by HMRC about your tax return.
  • The date your circumstances changed.

......Open that, or, better still, fill in your browser.

FTR, UTR has "If applicable" next to is, which has stated above, if you haven't filled out a return before, you won't have one.

Thankyou for clearing that up, I got a bit confused there. So i've got to register for Self-Assesment FIRST, then I should get a UTR and then I can use their online services to register as self-employed...or they will do that for me when I register for the self-assesment. Seems a bit backwards but atleast I understand it now.

Hi Andy

You register as self employed first, get your UTR, and then you can register for online filing if you are going to do your own tax returns. No need to register for online filing if you intend to use an accountant though.
