I know its cheap to register a company online from £10 - but what is the catch?

What are e-registrations?

Would anyone advise against this route or best go to your accountant for the service?

What info do I need to provide to register a company or is it better to buy one off the shelf and change its name?

All the information you need to provide is the names and addresses of the shareholders, plus some private details for the directors.

Cheap company registration agents use it as a loss leader to hook you into another service they you will continue to pay for.

I don't think off the shelf companies exist any more. They are no longer necessary as you can register a company online in minutes.

The process is explained here -

https://www.gov.uk/set-up-limited-company

You need to make sure a company is the right option for you and you know what's involved in running a company - thats where a good accountant is worthwhile.

You will also need to think up of a name for the Limited Company, prior to form submission.

- Worth considering whether the formal 'limited company' name needs to fit into your branding/trading name

- Appreciate that the admin burden compared to being a sole trader is far more onerous

- Consider how to structure the company...e.g. How many Directors, How many shareholders...what composition etc

As mentioned above, you can set it up yourself, but sometimes things go wrong or require changes after speaking with an accountant. This ultimately means it would have been cheaper to have paid for the accountant to set it up in the first place.

An accountant will also let you know what to consider in advance of starting to trade and assist you with all sort of things like bank accounts or making you aware of allowances etc that are available to you.

To set up a limited company, an individual needs to register with Companies House.

While registering for a limited company, the following details will be required:
  • Complete name and address of the business
  • Name and address of company directors and company secretary (if appointed in-house)
  • Shareholder details and share capital
Limited company registration process does not require much effort, but one which is nonetheless very important for brand name registration. You can get in touch with any Chartered Accountants, and will have a discussion.

it’s just a submission of data in a web form to Companies House....

Basic Incorporation Certificate only document provided.
No virtual office address facility.
No Statutory Books provided so you have set these up yourself.
No company secretarial services - share certificates, Minutes of Meetings etc

E-Registration service helps agents and customers to maintain their revenue registrations online. You can register a company online in a few minutes. It is better to use your own company's name. Consulting an accountant is very important before setting a business.
