Hi there!

Briefly, I would like to sell ebooks on my website (at the beginning 2-3 only) and I was wondering as what do I need to register? self employed e-commerce is ok?
And second important question. Im employed full time, so what type of fees will I have to pay anyway?

thanks for your help!

Hey.

If you're asking what I think you are asking, you need to register as self employed but that's it really.

From when you start your business (selling ebooks) you have 3 months to inform hmrc. You will then have to self asses for tax each year.

As long as your business doesn't exceed about 70k a year turnover you don't have to register for VAT (although double check the exact number).

Hope that helps.

Thanks man, just to be clear - informing hmrc is registering as self employed or
these are two separate things?

They are the same thing. Easiest way is just phone up hmrc (contact no on their website) and tell them you are starting a business as a sole trader. They'll tell you everything you need to do from there and they'll send you a self assessment form when the time comes.

I would not waste your time registering - even though you technically should - until you can actually see that you are going to earn some money from it - which you probably won't

It will save you and the inland revenue a great deal of grief and wasted time and effort

If it helps think of all those car booters - that are semi traders

Page makes a good point, it could be a while before you make your first sale as you could spend the first 2 months getting a flow of traffic to your website before you sell your first e-book. However, if you have invested your time wisely marketing your site and getting people to it, you could start to get improved visitor rates and your e-book could then start to show you a return with increasing sales.

I know start-up businesses need to keep costs down when your get started, so as a fellow UKBF member, I'd be happy to give you an extended 2 month free trial of the ShopIntegrator hosted shopping cart as a way for you to have a no-cost digital download solution. To sell digitial downloads would then simply be a case of:

  1. Create a product in your ShopIntegrator product manager (e.g. stock code, name , price) and upload and attach your file(s) to your product to make it a digital download product.
  2. Copy and paste the auto-generated shop button script in to your website's web page, e.g. a Buy Now button for that e-book
  3. Enter your PayPal account name to connect your checkout to a free PayPal business account.

That's it, you'd have a fully running e-book download store and checkout connected to PayPal. When your shopper successfully completes payment to you, ShopIntegrator automatically manages the delivery of the purchased file(s) to the shopper.

You can have this free for the first 2 months to see if it works for you. Register for a free no-obligation digital download trial here >>>

Then get in touch with me through a private message on UKBF and I will double your trial period as promised.
