Recycle Fridge and Washing Machines

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you could help me find out how to get information on recycle companies that get 2nd hand fridges and washing machines from companies like comet, currys, john lewis etc

I recently heard that when companies like comet sell new fridges/washing machines to their customers, they take the old ones and give it to the recycling companies.

I will really appreciate if you guys could help me out.

thanks

Mo.

Thanks for the reply Bill, however the first link just talks about comet's policy on social responsibility and what it is doing to recycle electronics but it doesnt give any information about what it does to those electronics. I heard they give to the companies and i needed information on those companies.

the second link talks about a company that is for supply chain management and distribution etc, which i cannot see the relevance to the question being asked, please let me know if i am missing the point of the second link..

thank you

Hi, you could try googling the WEEE Directive, all old electrical goods now have to be processed in accordance with various laws to ensure as much is recycled as possible. Anyone accepting old electrical goods which are to be thrown away has to be registered as an authorised waste goods carrier and registered as an official disposer of WEEE waste. They also have to provide legal documents to the disposee (Comet, Currys, etc) so that the disposee can prove that they're complying with the law. As far as I'm aware, Currys et al keep huge warehouses of old appliances which are collected and recycled by contract companies, but I don't have any info on who they are.

Hi ms4602,

My name’s Matt and I’m from Comet.

When a scrap appliance is received, Comet ensure that any hazardous components are disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Once any hazardous components are removed, appliances are then stripped, compacted and are melted down for recycling purposes.

Please be advised that we are however unable to disclose information regarding the recycling facilities that we use, as this varies between the different types of appliance.

Hope that this information helps.

Thanks

Matt
