Recovering Overpaid Energy Charges

I read an interesting article in the Sunday Times yesterday detailing how Energy Brokers had been overcharging commercial clients. I have spent today doing some research and it would appear that buinesses are indeed getting refunds from the energy providers.

There are several law firms running cases on behalf of clients, but be cautious before you sign any agreements with them as some are charging as much as 30% of what they recover whilst others are charging significantly less.

I will post an update tomorrow when I have a list of firms that are advertising to undertake this work on a reduced fee.

Hi Mr D

You're right to a certain extent but, unlike the PPI claims, many of these cases are well above the Small Claims Court limit which means solicitors can represent the businesses who have been mis-sold and, importantly, get their fees paid by the defendants (the energy companies) as opposed to charging the client a percentage of the compensation award. This means that a business who have already overpaid can reclaim at no further risk, and no further cost.

The largest claim I have seen to date is £2.8m, but the average is closer to £24,000.

OFGEM suggests that the total amount to be repaid to firms is close to £29bn!!

And who pays for the repayment? The customers.... as always.

I’m involved in this space - we charge a set fee for the service that is all inclusive. Obviously the larger the claim payout, the better value this represents.
