Could be back in the minefield of finding some reseller hosting again :-(

Don't particularly want cheap but also don't particularly want to pay for resources I don't need

It's effectively just about 20 of my own very small sites and 2 or 3 I look after for other people.

I would want WHM and cPanel

Looking at £200 - £300 annual price range - any recommendations?

Please no recommending your own services

Annual, it's only 20 non-mission critical, small blog type sites
Might be worth you looking at some high end reseller hosting and then putting 2 or more sites into 1 cpanel, so you get that premium level service, at that price point. For your budget, if you wanted 20+ individual cPanels, your going to wind up on a budget service provider.

If you can double the budget of half the requirements, then you can easily get onto a premium level service where you may never have to move ever again.

Halving the cPanel's though would just mean you could put 2 or more websites into each cPanel, resource sharing, as they are not critical sites.

I don't particularly need cPanels for all of them, trouble is once you have used it it's tricky to go backwards :-(

I didn't know you could have multiple domains in one cPanel how does that work?
Is it just similar to add-on domains in shared hosting?

Yep, just add-on domains, and now cPanel has the facility to "Export an addon domain into its own cPanel" so if you had an allowance of say 10 cPanel accounts, and chose to put 4 addon domains in each cPanel, thats 50 websites, and if any of them grew and wanted to go live, then separating them into their own account is easy, and it works perfectly too. All of them would have free SSL too.

I would definitely not recommend using Addon Domains.

The last thing you want is a non critical WordPress website for example getting out of date, being compromised and sending spam for example, and then disrupting the service of causing the other websites in the account to be compromised.

There should be plenty of hosts that don't charge a fortune that provide a reasonable number of cPanel accounts and a good service.

£200 per year can provide decent reseller hosting with support for that many accounts. And around £300 can provide eCommerce hosting that supports 20 cPanel accounts.

If you currently have a reseller account and each website sits in its own cPanel account then combining these and moving them into a couple of cPanel accounts is a waste of time and effort. If you keep the individual accounts the entire accounts including all emails and settings can be migrated in. Otherwise you'll need to add the Addon Domains, manually migrate the websites, manually migrate the emails and so forth.

And using Addon Domains creates messy accounts, with no account separation - which harms security.

Resources will also be allocated on a per account basis, so you'll get lower performance.

One supposedly high performance cPanel account stuffed full of Addon Domain blog type sites is unlikely to perform better than individual cPanel accounts for each website, on decent UK reseller or eCommerce/semi dedicated hosting.

Just check feedback, reviews and comments on places like UKBF to see if the provider you're interested is likely to provide a good service. You can always contact them as well. A decent provider should prioritise helping existing clients over any sales enquiries, but that can be used to root out providers that use outsourced or low level staff, and the quality and speed of response can be a good indicator of the service you'll get.

    Best of luck,

    Dan

Dan, he already stated very clearly, "it's only 20 non-mission critical, small blog type sites" and I did state clearly that add-on domains do share resources.

Add-on domains do not "Harm security", poor security harms security. Geeze mate, what a response from you, so harsh. Let me go get that knife removed from my back...

Right, so if the websites have a low resource requirement that can easily support sticking with multiple cPanel accounts.

I don't agree with the suggestion that one supposedly higher performing account will provide a better result or mean you'll get better support or service.

I would take 20 separate cPanel accounts with a good resource allocation over one account with likely quite a bit lower overall resources.

It's easier to support separate accounts and it creates a lower chance for issues.

Addon Domains are worse for security than having full account separation. Websites having poor security is unfortunately highly common. So it's best that the foundation is as strong as possible to cope with any potential issues.

I don't know what's harsh about what I wrote. This isn't directed at you and no offence is intended at all. I simply fundamentally disagree with the suggestion of using a couple of cPanel accounts vs keeping a reseller account with each website in its own cPanel account.
We nearly always advise against using Addon Domains. I really don't like them, and for very good reason I'd argue.

@UKSBD seems pretty on top of keeping websites up to date and secure, but even so account separation is definitely desirable. And the number of WordPress websites we regularly see out of date, with poor plugins etc. means it's really best to err on the side of caution here and take the best approach possible. It also means less work, and no change to the current setup - which is the normal way to have those websites hosted.

Dan at Hi Hosting (@Dan_HiHosting ) has always given me a terrific service. I have no idea what the content in the posts above mean or if his company can do what the OP wants, all I can say is that as a customer I am delighted to have Dan in the background.

    Thanks Graeme, much appreciated.
I'm glad you're pleased with our service. It's been quite a number of years now and we look forward to helping for your many years more.
It's very rewarding supporting UK businesses such and yours and seeing them grow over the years.

    All the best,

    Dan

Hi. I would recommend Jolt Hosting's Reseller package. I have a lot of websites and I've been using Jolt for quite some time now. You only have to pay £1 for the first month so it's like a 30 day trial. You can test all of your websites for 1 month and if you like the performance and speed, then you continue. They also transfer websites without hassle.
