Recieving money through PayPal.

Hi all
Please forgive my complete lack of knowledge of PayPal!

Someone wants to pay me through PayPal for an item I have sold them. Will he or me be charged a fee to do this? If so does the fee get taken off straight away with the transaction or will he or me be charged at say the end of the month?

the charge will be debited before its settled into your PayPal account

It's funny because I'm sure previously, years ago I have never been charged for recieving money. I rarely use it just this guy is insisting he pays that way.

depends on the account you have with PayPal. my advise would be to get your buyer to pay via the friends and family option as this way you will not be charged for the transaction

If I was the buyer I wouldn’t use the friends and family option as that removes any protection options that they have.

I fell foul of that buying a bit for my motorcycle that wasn’t as described but couldn’t do anything about it.

If the buyer is so insistent (and you a little hesitant) of using PayPal, perhaps let him know of the fees... and that they will be added to his bill

But you are not offering PayPal as a viable payment option.

So explain its a "handling charge" for their convenience.

As above, payment processing fees shouldn't be added on to the selling price as a separate charge but like any other business overhead you need to consider covering it in your final selling price/profit margins. Companies like JustEat are known to have changed to charging a 'handling fee' but this has to apply to all orders/transactions regardless of payment type (i.e. you cannot discriminate based on payment method).
