Received Paypal Invoice for refund?

Sold on ebay. Buyer said item not received. Sent replacement. Buyer escalated claim. Paypal refunded the buyer from my Paypal account.

Now just over a week later I get an invoice from Paypal demanding I pay them back the money they refunded, eventhough it was already taken from my account. The bill is also in USD (European customer).

Any clues?

Ok, just looked again and the email is from Ebay Inc. not Paypal.

So they are saying they have refunded the buyer instead of Paypal. Presumably this is all since Ebay and Paypal are now separate companies. The money was taken from my Paypal account by Ebay and clearly shown on my Paypal statement.

Looks like they've got their wires mixed up since they split.

I have replied to their email. I can't be bothered to call them.

I have fallen foul of where the buyer can get two refunds one from ebay and one from paypal. It happens when the buyer escalates the ebay case before the paypal payment is completed. The buyer gets a refund from ebay, then later on the paypal payment completes and the buyer gets a second refund.

I could never convince ebay of their errors, I gave up in the end as it was only for £3

Well, the email didn't bounce but they claim the replies are not monitored. Did call them eventually and they couldn't find evidence of this invoice they've sent me. They agreed the money had been refunded from my account and told me there is nothing to worry about.

The other anomaly is that they sent the invoice to me 31st August and it states the payment is due by 30th August.

My fear is that non-payment may trigger something automatically against my account.

Maybe this helps (you can find this under eBay 'Contact Us'):

Here's some information that might help you for 'Appealing a decision on a case'
If you're unhappy with the result of a case that was not found in your favour, you can appeal the decision within 30 days of the case being closed.

New information should be included in the appeal. For example, sellers should be able to show that the buyer received the item and it matches the listing description, or a refund was made before the case was closed. Buyers need to be able to show they paid for an item and haven't received it, or the item doesn't match the seller's description.

To appeal a case, buyers can find their item on the Purchase history page and select Appeal from the More actions dropdown menu. If you're a seller, you'll find the case in your Seller Dashboard.

We will review your appeal and get back to you with a decision.
