Realities of running a chipshop

Hi all

A chip shop has recently come up on the market in my local area and although I don't know the selling price I'm interested. I don't know why but I get the perception that they make good money. I'd like to introduce free delivery on orders, and also introduce some healthy eating options.

Can any of you who have experience in this market tell me the reality of running a chipshop?

I managed a chip shop for 2 years
1st thing is....forget the healthy option...chip shop = no healthy options and people only want fried food
2nd.....long long hours...at least 3 hours prep prior to opening for the day
3rd.....alot of training for yourself unless you already have the skilled staff....filleting fish is NOT easy

lots and lots of other info...having said that if you get a prime spot, near a school or within a large housing estate then it can be a good money spinner

My top tip ; Be careful not to nomnomnom your way through all the stock before opening time.

It should be known that I know absolutely nothing about running a chip shop. The above may infact be terrible advice.

I've always promised myself I will run a chippie when I grow up. One thing that puts me off is they seem to be a magnet for yobs, especially troublesome teens and troublesome pre-teens.

Any tips on how to tackle this? It's a problem for our local chippie right now and the plod seems useless.

Firstly as part of the handover process the outgoing owner should show you the ropes for as long as it takes to train you how to run the business.

Secondly if its not broke why try to fix it?

Thirdly, how do you know you can afford the business if you dont even know how much it it on the market for. And how do you know you can live on the earnings of the shop?

A rule of thumb about buying a leasehold business is that you need all of the asking price and more in one way or another. So if the business is for sale at £70k forget it if you dont have at lease £80k in cash and assets.
