Reactive Driving!

The thing I hate most when driving is somebody up my arse.

I am not a 'slow driver', though am more mindful of speed limits nowadays having had to go on a Speed Awareness Course a year ago.

Many years ago I heard the adage 'The person behind controls distance; the one in front controls speed' and I've always remembered this - and make use of it regularly.

When someone gets really close, at an appropriate time I take my foot off the accelerator and pull on the hand brake a bit - so my brake lights don't come on - while watching in the rear view mirror. It gives me a bit of a thrill suddenly seeing the bonnet dip, where the follower has to brake really sharply. Once a follower braked so hard, he skidded and the car ended up at right angles to the road - he then had to do a 3-point turn to rectify matters.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone else, as road rage does come into play. Once a person I did this too overtook in a crazy way causing cars on the opposite carriageway to swerve into the verge to avoid a collision. He then tried to do the same to me as I to him - except, as normal, I kept a proper distance between us. It ended up with us slowing down to 5 mph, then he'd accelerate away, and when I did the same he'd then slow down again. Fortunately, a cop car pulled out behind me, so he behaved himself from then on.

Sadly, a few months ago I bought a new Meriva. I really like the car, but it has an electric hand brake, so I can't use this to slow. I've devised a work around though, I now put the gears into second and pop the clutch - works almost as well.

So to sum up then, if somebody's driving like a dick behind you (which could cause an accident), the answer is not to just ignore them, or pull over and let the dick past - but instead you drive like a dick too, yes? (which could cause an accident).

What an excellent solution. You must be very proud
