Hi Guys,

A few years ago i set up an online store which did ok but not great and eventually i lost interest and closed it down.

However now that i have more knowledge of e-commerce i would like to give it another ago as last time i admit i was pretty clueless.

However i have not had any dialogue with the company who designed and hosted my site for quite some time and if i was to re-open the site would i have to continue to use this company as i would rather not.

Do i have the right to keep the site but leave them?

The site is chicuniquedotcodotuk

There is currently a website on hold page up in its place if looking at this helps

Just not sure whether i own the site and domain name or the company that designed it and hosted it for me do as they did everything including getting the name

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

The domain seems to be currently registered by 123Reg - an ISP providing domain names and hosting etc., but registered to an individual (whose details I know but don't want to publish here in an open forum - PM me if you want more detail). The domain name expires on 19th January 2011. You may find you have little choice being so close to the renewal date but to re-register the domain with 123Reg and then maybe move it at a later date.

Aside from that, the actual web design may have come from anyone.

The Registrant's website is actually you, so you might find that you are the Registrant and that you have total control over the domain name and can therefore host it wherever you like using whoever you like for the design.

It would appear that you got the original domain name from either Web Fusion or 123Reg - in which case you may have log-in details... try them to see if you have control of the domain and, if that fails, email 123Reg and see what they say. They should be keen to respond as the domain is up for renewal and they would rather still trade with it than ignore any request and be forced to let the domain die.

If you need any more help, PM me with some more detail and I will see if I can help.

Hi Jackie,

Since PM'ing you i have found the registrant details for the domain and they are my details.

Does this mean that i can up sticks and take my website away from forte trinity and work with another company?

Thanks in advance

Will i own the design and be able to take it to another designer for them to tweak? Or is this something I would have to discuss with the company i originally used?

Sorry about all the questions just dont want to approach my original web designers without being armed with info as there not the most pleasant bunch

Cheers

That depends on what, if any, contract you had with your original web designers. If the contract states that you own all rights to the website (blah blah blah) then you can take it elsewhere, but i highly doubt that this is the case as they want your custom.

Hope this helps

Speak to whoever is going to design your new site. See what they can do to "replicate" - not clone - your existing site and improve on it wherever you need it improved. Deal with the new guy rather than do anything with the old guy.

I know the registrant is yourself but do you have the login and password to the domain - you may have to contact forte trinity for that - or maybe go direct to 123Reg if you really don't want to go near forte trinity.

Your new design guy will be able to either transfer the domain or re-point its domain settings. The only slight complication is that the renewal date is so very soon.

Hi Kate
Just had a look at your website as I study Wing Chun so obviously it got my interest.
Had to smile though following your comment above regarding me putting the 0870 number; yours has an 0845. I know it's not exactly the same but it doesnt give much clue on where you are geographically...
