Re Launching a Web Site

Hi,

i used to run my own website however in the end we decided to take the site down as we were not making enough money through the site,

i have a copy of the site files, the .sql file and another file containing all the files for the website etc....

the questions I have are:

1) can my website be loaded up to a server to run ''live'' again?
2) How much will this cost?
3) Will I be able to amend/change the site?

Thanks for any advice forthcoming

Best Regards,

ICS

You need to find a webserver ( host) which is compatible with your code and database scripts. What was the scripting development language ? If it was PHP/MYSQL then you just need a LAMP supported server. There are plenty of threads at UKBF which talks about recommended hosts/servers. You also need to think of a domain name ( I am assuming that you still own it) , if not please register a domain name which reflects your business. 123 is a good place to start for domain name registration.

Finally, use a File transfer product and tranfer your files.

And finally you need to run your Database scripts.

You may also want to fix the TITLE, ANCHOR tags of the web pages before you upload them or you can fix them gradually.

Once the website is up and running, you need to start the focus on SEO.. that is although another topic alltogether.

Let me know if you need any further help. There are plenty of experts out here who may do it for you.

yeah, as long as you have all the main files shouldnt be any issues.
cost wise your looking at paying for your domain, web host and anyones time if you need assistance installing.
depending on wether you have content management system or not depends on how difficult the changes will be, if you have no CMS then basic html skills will be required.

Pretty much as others have said:

Assuming you've got all the files, then there's no reason why not.

Cost may vary depending upon which technologies are involved, but do make sure you get 'decent' hosting - not just the cheapest you can find.

You may need to get a domain name as well if you don't still have your original one registered?

And yes - you'd be able to get in to change things if you wanted.

Hi All,

thanks for all the advice and information,

When the site was last ''live'' I could go into the back end and add catagories and amend price and sort the admin pages out etc...

Would i still be able to do this as it was a full ecommerce site that we regularly changed prices, added sales periods etc....

I dont have the original domain anymore I think it is still available however not too fussed about this as I would be happy to change the domain name as the last one was a bit too long I think

ICS,

To do it in the right way, I would strongly advice that you take a free consultation with a web developer. I am getting a perception that your website was built either using an opensource e-commerce platform or someone had written PHP/mysql or .net/ms sql code to implement the shopping experience.

Did it also include a payment gateway like paypal?

I am happy to have a look if you can zip the files and send it over to me.

My email is [email protected]

I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to choose an appropriate business name /domain name. You will see it's potential when you will focus on promoting your website through SEO in the future.

the site used Zen Cart and we had our Paypal account linked to it to collect the payments etc....

ICS,

Your post started if you could re-use your code and sql scripts. A simple answer to that is yes. Can you yourself do it? I guess the answer depends on your web development and deployment skills.

If your code was written sometime back and there are no documentations ( which I would assume), your best bet is to getting your hands dirty by installing a LAMP Server on your PC/laptop, installing Zen cart and doing a Sandbox testing for Paypal.

To go live - you would need - a live domain, PHP hosting server, Paypal account to test transactions using credit/debit cards.

Not a problem. I am sure you can probably pick up some of the basic skills while going through this excercise. What is your plan now? Do you want find someone to help you out ? What's your budget? Do you need any references?

ZenCart. Should be no problem if you have got the files. You should have two different sets of files, one being the site, one being a dump of the database. Lots of people on here could help you or do it all for you, including myself.

If you want me to help, then just ask I won't charge anything for an initial look at what you have got.
