RBS merchant account

Hi

I am thinking of setting up a merchant account with RBS and wondered if anyone uses them and if they are a decent choice?

I have tried searching for info but can't find any.

Thanks

We bank with RBS, but alas, I'd be reticent about trying to set up a Streamline account with them.

One of our clients is currently trying to get their Streamline details from their 'relationship manager' having had an internet merchant account for three years. They are being quite useless and that doesn't bode well - even if they are quick on the draw on setting up an IMA for you.

Best to shop around the banks and if you find one that knows what you are talking about when you say an Internet Merchant Account, then use them.

We've had - or heard of - good experiences with Lloyds TSB (fast, though not friendly), Abbey (fast and quite friendly), HSBS (efficient but payment gateway isn't the best).

It really depends on whether you want to use WorldPay, Protx, SecPay, et al or another provider that acts as a bank - like PayPal.

Would be good to have reports on banks setting up IMAs and who were the most helpful.

I tried getting in touch with RBS.

Got through to their internet business deposit account tried speaking to them on the phone. When i gave the terms like Internet merchant they had no idea what I was going on about.

They said all is done via post and just tried to give their postal address.

I am now looking at banks where I can at least have a person to speak to in branch.

Thanks for your replys.

Flying Hippy I have had almost the opposite response. After the first time I spoke with someone regarding a merchant account they have phoned most days asking if i had made a decision yet and what I thought

Out of the banks I have tried its down to lloyds tsb and rbs as these are the only ones i have managed to speak woth on the phone and seem to give decent enough rates.

I am currently going through a hsbc set up and have been quoted 1.618 for cc's and 30p for debits with them.

They are good rates but I think you can trim another tenth of a percent off that rate if you go with Streamline through a membership with the FSB.

We've never had any problems with Streamline, the more variable part of the equation is the PSP... Worldpay who are also part of the RBS group do not provide the level of service they used to, sadly.

We use them and it works very well. The business bank manager from RBS here is fantastic and very very helpful, easy to get hold of and has an excellent reputation in her own rights.

Streamline themselves did have some problems setting up the account and my husband spent some time on the phone trying to sort it out. Problem was we have a legal name and trading name which confused them.

Once it was sorted however it is much better than the original Worldpay we were using as the money now goes straight into the account instead of being tied up online till the end of the month. You have to be in business some time before this option opens up.

rates i have been offered are

rbs:

credit cards - 1.8% , debit cards - 28p, £250 set up fee

llyods tsb:

credit cards - 1.9%, debit cards - 28p and £200 set up fee.

The rates for llyods were much higher but i told them the rates rbs were offering and they dropped them quite a bit.

We use Streamline in the shop, find the rates a tad expensive as we have low value items which customers tend to use their card for so effectively we lose the percentage off our margin. Moral Dilemma : Make them pay minimum £5.00 or Lose the Sale and customer coming back.:|

We're taking the descision to go on the road with the shop and want to have a GPRS Terminal, Streamline want to charge me a new set up fee for their Pronto terminal. Surely existing customers should have a preferential rate considering what they take off us a month for our sales.

As has been mentioned in a number of posts already....................the FSB has a great deal with Streamline and for Mobile Terminals the deal is with 123 Send, but you must have a Merchant Number and a FSB Membership number to get the deals. You will probably save more than it costs to be a member of the FSB if you look upon it as per annum.

A lot of local shops which I know of have a 20-30p surcharge on credit/debit card payments under £10.

Alliance and Leicester, I think use Streamline.

RBS/Nat West are shortly introducing throughout the country a terminal specifically for purchases under £10. I believe this terminal is in use with the London area. Anyone have any knowledge of using it or seen it working?
