10 Things This....

5 Things That.....

3 Weird Tricks.....

I'm sure you get the gist of where i'm going with this.

Essentially, generic lists that offer no real substance or meaning are starting to drive me a little batty.

My Rant Is Inspired By:

A discussion entitled 'The 5 Selves You Need To Work From Home' on one of the 'small business/startup' groups on Linkedin. It merely contained a link to an article on the authors website and offered the same, un-inspiring, generic and unhelpful list of things that most articles of this nature usually do, including:

1. Have self-discipline
2. Be motivated
3. Be a self-starter
4. Have self-confidence
5. Self-educate

Yaaaaawn!

The article has not addressed anywhere near the core of what it takes to be self-employed and certainly won't help any aspiring entrepreneurs who may have clicked on it seeking real advice as they are about to embark on the hardest journey of their lives.

I believe that the very core of being able to work for yourself comes from having a cause, a passion and a belief that what you are striving for will make a fundamental difference in not your own, but other people's lives.

If that belief doesn't keep you up at night, invade your dreams or make you feel like you would be doing the world an injustice if you don't make it a reality, then all of the five factors mentioned in that article don't even matter.

What's your purpose? What's your 'why'? As Simon Sinek rightly say's " People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it" ... now that's advice right there!

Why is the author of that article not taking the initiative to educate and pass on meaningful knowledge to aspiring entrepreneurs in his message? You may be the most self-motivated person in the world, but given that money is merely a by-product of success, without a real cause, that motivation simply doesn't remain for long.

What are your thoughts? Am I just deprived of sleep and blowing things out of all proportion?

Yep the Internet is awash with X....YYY....that....blah blah

..but as others said because they work.

The only way to get past this is to offer massive value; i.e. I found a popular site just because the owner had put together a blog post entitled 'Google’s 200 Ranking Factors: The Complete List' because a) Its a subject we all want to know about and b) 200???? Yes 200! Thats a bloody lot! Beats your 5,7,11 etc. etc.

But hey thats the problem with t'inter-webby, a few influencers post what you should be doing, everyone follows it and it gets done to death!
