Methinks:
Sod that. I shouldn’t have to speak to anyone to opt out.

Me to RAC:
I’m writing to confirm that I do not wish my membership to renew automatically. Please confirm, by return, that you have changed my preferences to reflect this.

RAC to Me:
Thanks for your email - I'm sorry you're looking to leave us! Would 50% off your renewal make a difference? That would mean you'd pay £137.00 for a whole year of breakdown cover.

AA ans RAC are way iover-priced (with no evidence of service to back it up)

Green Flag have historically been good, but I now use Start - £120 me and the wife in any vehicle.

We are very lucky

My wife has a lloyds bank account that predates the changes to club lloyds - as such she is on the old benefits (now called club lloyds silver) but doesnt have to pay the monthly fee.
That includes -

Honestly think that should be against the law. Anyone offering massive discounts off the automatic renewal price should be fined. They're just ripping off their loyal customers.

There are FCA rules which are supposed to stop it happening with insurance

In May 2021, we published PS21/5 which set out our final rules to address the harm we had found in our GI Pricing Practices Market Study. On 18 August, we published PS21/11, making minor changes to these rules.

It would be interesting to know if this applies to breakdown cover or whether it has ever been tested.

I find this question way more interesting than I should perhaps admit to, because I believe breakdown cover is merely an insurance policy now as the service is usually delivered by local garages paid by the 'insurer' just like private medical cover such as Bupa which has been proven to be an insurance policy now.
