As a newbie to all this, i realise the importance of seo but is it still highly relevant with the high number of listings on google coming from paid ads, maps, yell etc all before the organic stuff. Would people look further down the first page when the first listing could be 7th, 8th position.

Will depend on industry but the best way to view things is by click through rate.
An Advanced web ranking study did a good job of breaking that down. Just do a search for 'seo ctr by position'.

Realistically for position 7/8 you're looking at 2 / 3% of that traffic. So if a term gets searched for 300 times a month and you get a click through rate of 2% then that's 6 qualified people to your website a month. If you're selling pencils probably not worth it, but if you're a local lawyer with each transaction being worth hundreds/ thousands, then maybe worth it.

Digital Marketing is a cumulative exercise, so, organic rankings still have their place. If one ranking for a set of related terms gets you 10 targeted visitors a month, having 10 pages ranking well takes you to a potential of 100-300 targeted visitors a month - this is inbound marketing.

If you have a 20% conversion rate, then this is 20-60 enquirers a month, which falls down to 4-12 sales a month just from SEO. If your average sale is £500, this is £2000 to £6000 per month (£24,000 to £72,000 a year) potential income - so, has value.

But there are other activities you can add to this to enhance your proposition in the market place like SEO + PPC + Maps + Social. Outbound marketing adds again to include emails, calls, brochures, database marketing, networking, etc.,.

Not doing any marketing is like going fishing without any hooks or bait. The fish mostly don't just jump into your boat and say, "Take me home with you!"

Based on my own experience, I would say that it depends on the type of your target audience and the type of your business. Some people don't trust paid ads (I'm one of them - I'll never click on paid ads exactly on Google and other search engines at all, but it works differently with paid ads on social media like Facebook - they attract me), some people trust them and click. That's why I would suggest you to analyse your audience first before going for payments. It also depends on what people are looking for: when I search for a restaurant or a hotel, I skip pays ads. But if I look for something I can't find for a long time, then I click on any possibility. This is the time I'm ready to scroll till 2nd or 3rd page to get what I need.

SEO still generating more clicks than other sources, but the gap is narrowing.

Google set the results in which paid ads are placed on top listing, if the query corresponds with the paid ads. Normally people are not aware of these paid ads on top so as a user they will visit the websites on the first page to determine what's site satisfied their needs and expectations.

I suppose yes since most of the time people would often compare the results as long as they are found in the first page. I for myself have been clicking on several links in the first page so I could compare the info they are providing in relation to a certain topic... The real issue happens if your site is enlisted on the 2nd, 3rd. etc. pages since people don't usually go beyond the first page when doing a SE search...:)
