What are peoples opinions on light vs dark sites?

What do you prefer?

Do you think light sites convert better than dark?

Does it not depend on what you are selling and how the colour fits the product? Having said this clean white sites seem to be a current flavour so I guess there is a reason for this maybe just easier to read everything?

To be honest I don't know if it's a product type thing or not.

Just curious as to whether or not people trust light more than they do dark

Totally depends on the brand.. some dark themed websites work well (for example, a glowstick selling website might use it to display their products across as being bright and colourful?).

There is no right or wrong, better or worse. It all depends on the objective/purpose of the website.

I prefer a light background, just think it's makes the site more professional and a cleaner design. l also prefer to eat from a white plate to a dark one for some reason.

instead of asking our opinions perform a/b testing using google analytics / your own stats and test it for YOUR audience

Light sites are my preference, but if you're selling vampire books/movies etc it might be different? As said above, an a/b test will give you soome good stats to make a decision from.

I think that before starting any website design, look at competitors and check how the website templates in the specific area look. It is quiet easy, for example generally themes for music sites have a dark background, like this - http://www.templatemonster.com/category/music-wordpress-themes/

A/B testing is of course the way to go. But personally light.

I have had more success with dark-style based websites in the past.
I don't know why, but software and hardware sells better on dark websites.
Not all companies are dark, I only speak from my experience though.
A/B testing is key and doesn't cost you a dime.
