Question. Using Google Checkout/Wallet to collect payments

B

british steve

I have a customer overseas who wants us to open a Google Checkout/Wallet account so he can pay us (less than £2k) each month!

I have never used Google for Payments - does it work in the same way as PayPal does? Does Google take the payee to their servers (like PayPal) to process the payments - at the moment orders are placed on our site or via email and we send the customer an invoice.

If the payment is processed by us on our servers then we would need to put an SSL certificate on the site etc which would be a pain in the ass and more trouble than it's worth!

Any information/help would be great.

Thanks.

Retiring Google Checkout Announcement

On November 20th, 2013, Google will shut down its Checkout product. Here’s how this may affect you:

Merchants selling digital goods may transition to Google Wallet for digital goods
Merchants selling through Google-hosted marketplaces (e.g. Google Play) will be unaffected
Merchants selling physical goods will need to switch to third-party alternatives (see below)

We used it but don't recommend it. I keep the account open for emergencies. 3.5% is a high handling fee considering there is no support. There are numerous horror stories of frozen accounts. We never had this issue but if it happens, there is no one to call.

It also takes 3 working days for the funds to clear into your account, unlike PayPal which is instant these days.

The main reason we dumped it was because it allows customers to change their delivery address AFTER completing checkout. However it does not change the delivery address shown, it puts it in a footnote.

Hi British Steve

I thought you already had a Merchant account facility for your website ? In which case you should be able to accept card payments from your Client online. The only issue you may hit is that you will have to have the funds converted en route to Sterling, so this will affect the net value received.

PayPal whilst a viable alternative is very expensive at 3.4% plus 20 p per transaction plus possibly a gateway fee, and are known to freeze payments without warning or explanation, not to mention questionable Customer service..

If you do not have a Merchant account then perhaps this could be a good time to consider, as you could possibly be missing out on other customers as well, so could be a positive boost to your business ?

Latest stats on this are 85% of UK adults now carry payment cards, and 65% will not even enter a shop or visit a website that does not accept payment by card..

Hope this helps ?

You will receive a lot fraud orders and you will end up loosing money and you won't get your products back. Google doesn't protect sellers at all. So DON'T USE GOOGLE CHECKOUT as seller. I had same issue and Google couldn't charge me for it and they emailed me I sent them proof of delivery they still try to charge me they couldn't :) Then I told them F.. OFF :) They never got back to me :)

Mark, my company has been using PayPal for 11 years. We've never had a charge back or had any payments frozen. We pay only 1.4% + 20p due to the volume of sales we put through PayPal. This is less than our bank charged as a merchant rate. The 3.4% you mention is not their fixed rate.

I can't post a URL but Google "PayPal merchant fees".

The best thing with PayPal these days is instant withdrawals.

I can only assume then that you are trading above £ 50K per month with PP so yes you would be on very good rates, and if you have a 0 % charge back record then even better, but I would have to say you are probably the exception that proves the rule !

Kind regards

Mark

For 1 customer is it worth adding another costly payment method? really? Set up a second current account with your bank, issue the details to this client and tell them to pay using online banking/bill payment direct into your account, bearing in mind that they need to pay any fees for doing so. sweep the money from client account into your main account as soon as it hits. No fees for you........

This is how our foreign customers pay us - hope that helps :)
