Public Liability or Product Liability??

Hi all,

I've designed some baby products, of which are being manufactured in China and I'm importing them. I've researched all the regulations/safety standards in relation to baby goods and I'm also in touch with Trading Standards, so I know my products are legit to sell in the UK/EU.

Initially, I will be selling online only - I want to know what insurance I need? I assume if I were to sell at a market on a stall I'd need public liability?? But as my products are strictly online sales to begin with, do I get product insurance? Does this protect me if someone has a mishap with one of my products? (HIGHLY unlikely!) ... Do I need any insurance at all?!

Also, I'm a discharged Bankrupt (BR 2008) and when I tried to get a quick quote from simplybusiness they referred me to the wacko high rate insurers, despite the fact I want to insure the business rather than myself...:( any recommendations for slightly more accommodating insurers?

Thank you all in advance.

Hi Hannah, we aim to be as flexible as possible with issues such as these but importing from China can be fraught with problems. Saying that, it's something that a lot of businesses like to do (or would like to do) as the prices can be a lot cheaper.

Drop me a PM if you want a chat around your cover to see if there's anything we can do.

What can I say, I have a positive attitude! (Sometimes...I am female after all)

Thanks, just as I thought. Will approach some brokers :)

I'd be interested to see the quotes you get!

Most markets will require you to have 3rd party product and public liability insurance - the market operator I work for needs £5,000,000 for both. However it's not expensive if you choose a company which specialises in providing cover for market traders. LRO (google LRO Insurance) is the cheapest I'm aware of which starts at £40 per year. NMTF (National Market Traders Federation) was traditionally the one everyone used but it's over £100 per year now, however you do get extras such as help with Tax or VAT investigations, discount van insurance etc.

I'd advise to check the requirements of the markets you're considering using and go with the cheapest quote you can get, it's unlikely you'll ever need it.

Hi Hannah,

If you still need a hand with this I'm happy to have a look at it. We have handled very similar cases to yours, such as a baby hammock company that get their product made in china, then shiped to the UK, for sale online worldwide.

drop me a pm, or call 01924 895568, don't forget to mention UKBF

Not sure if this is the correct place to post, but I'm wondering will product/public liability insurance cove me for going into customers homes to fit stickers and also fit stickers on customers vehicles,
Thanks

As long as you buy a policy that covers manual work away, then yes it would.

If you want a quote, or just a chat about what you need, feel free to get in touch.
