Public Liability Insurance to cover items placed on the highway

My local council in order to cynically make more money out of shop keepers wants to charge me for putting up an A board on the pavement. The council have sent me the forms to fill in, in order to put up an A board, and one of the details mentions public liability. It states that my public liability insurance needs to be 5 million and it needs to cover items placed on the highway.

I do have PLI and it covers up to 5 million however when I rang my insurer up she said that it didn't cover items placed on the highway and acknowledged that she wouldn't know where to start to get that sort of insurance.

I really don't want to pay more in premiums but should PLI cover items placed on the highway as a matter of course or is it something that you have to specifically ask for. My insurance is also quite specific as I have additional cover for body piercing.

Hi, your existing public liability insurance should cover this. Personally, I would speak with them again, ask for a further explanation as to why this would not be covered, and can they show you in the policy where it is excluded.
I wonder perhaps if they thought you were looking to insure the advertising board itself?
Hope this helps, I’d be interested to hear how you get on. If they wont agree ask them the cancellation terms (i.e make sure they wont charge you) and look for another policy, you are not asking for something unusual. It is very common practise for shops to have advertising boards. If you need any further help with this let me know.
Best of luck

Hi Linda
I will get back to them and clarify why they don't cover this.

I could cancel but I really need specific insurance that covers me to body pierce people. Not many insurers do this so I am a bit stuck really if they don't do this.

The insurer was pretty adamant that not many, if any, insurers would cover PLI for aboards on the highway. i know it may be common practise for shops to have a boards outside but that doesn't always mean that they will be covered.

I think I will ring up and ask other insurers if they do this.

thanks for your help

Hi,

Just to clarify, you do mean on the public pavement outside your shop?

If you're struggling give me a call or send me a direct message, this honestly shouldn't be an issue. I'm an insurance broker and have just spoken with one of my mainstream markets to get their take on in. They said provided permission is sought from the council, and due care and attention is taken i.e in bad weather it is chained down then this would be fine.

With regards body piercing, you would just need to find the right market/policy, yes it wouldn't be covered on say a standard shop policy.

Regards
Linda
