I'm thinking of writing an e-book and think i would need to protect it from illegal downloads .I came across [ smart dd ] has anyone ever used it at all. Thanks Scribe.
There's never a full proof way to protect digital media, and the more you try, the more awkward you make it for the user. Most likely, you'll pay for it to be protected, then find someone's broken the protection easily.
nickjohnston is correct, protection from illegal downloads will never be 100% full proof, so it is more about having a solution which means the majority of people buy it legally, without making the use of their purchased content difficult to use so it puts people off, such as with a full Digital Rights Management (DRM) software solution.
I just took a look at Smart DD, and all it is doing is sending the customer a link to their download after the purchase, the link then expiring after a period of time. Often, an email from an unfamiliar sender will be blocked by the receiver as SPAM which means you'll have an increased number of support emails asking "Where's my e-book?" that you'll then most likey have to manually send out.
The advantage of our solution is that the shopper moves straight from the completed purchase screen after their payment to your account's Shop Integrator digital download portal website where they may download the purchased ebook(s) specific to their order.
The number of downloads per purchased file in the order and the time limit to download the files is configurable by you.
We are also working on a feature upgrade that will be avilable in the next month or so which stamps the specific purchasers details as a digital water mark in to the downloaded PDF ebook. This will give you traceability of the original purchaser if the ebook is made freely available from their purchased copy. This should put off people from distributing their copy.
Our ecommerce plugins will allow you to place a digital download solution in to your new or existing website.
