How to get more traffic and exposure for a website.

What would you recommend?

Do I need to register the website with directories?
How much should I expect to pay to get promotion done for me?
What services are out there that one should use to get some exposure?

I have read a lot about promoting websites and so on. However, I like to get some answers from real experiences that worked best for you.

You can pay a ton of resources to send large amount of traffic to your website but that doesn't mean they will be interested in what you have to sell. If you do make sure you get targeted traffic appropriate to your market. It is the easiest way to get a lot of exposure.

1) Certainly, post your link in all good quality directories which you can find. *It will be easier for you, firstly find 1-2 popular competitors websites and check backlinks in google. You will see where this websites had post links.
2) It depends on niche and on your overall website recognition.
3) You can try Google AdWords.
