I have found out that for a yearly fee of £70-odd to be with the NMTF (National Market Traders Federation) you receive some free insurance including product liability insurance.

I sell on eBay and my own website. I was asked by NMTF if I would do markets, shows etc and I said yes I intend to do a couple a year and they said that I would be covered for eBay, website etc, within UK and Europe (not rest of world).

What happens though if for example I didn't get around to doing any markets or shows? Would the free insurance be invalid? How would they know?

It should be clearly stated in your policy documents if this is a condition of the policy,

Just out of intrest i am assuming that you have made the products etc???

Was this done on a phone call or are they sending you a full pack including your policy documentation.

This very well could be the case but i didnt know they could sell this direct to a consumer???

You as much need to check the wording of the membership as the insurance itself. In many of these cases (like packaged bank accounts) you dont get a personal policy but validity in cover is confirmed at the point of claim - ie NMTF wont tell Aviva (or whoever the u/w is) everytime a new member joins but when you make a claim against the policy Aviva will go to the NMTF and confirm you are a valid member or not.
