Processor help

Hi guys. I am looking to buy two new computers, and am lost as to which processors are faster.
There are pentiums, celerons, athlons and they all have different numbers.
Can someone give me a wee crash course?
Thanks.

pentiums use a considerably more efficient processing model, though it still depends completely on the model numbers... an AMD Sempron 3000+ is better than a Pentium II :p.

Could you give us those model numbers?

I prefer AMD,

Depends what you want to do with your machine

For high end multitasking I would recomend one of the dual core AMD's, the dual core pentiums are cheaper but not as powerful.

For standard/high end use id recomend AMD64 3500 Venice or 3700 San diego core. If you are chooosing AMD its better to go for socket 939 as it is more upgradeable in future Venice and Sandiego are both 939 chips.

Pentium 4's are not bad also but some cores, namely prescot run a little too hot for my liking.

If you know roughly what you are after drop me a pm and il be able to give you an idea of the sort of system that you need, I dont sell PC's but spend all day fixing them. I can give you an idea and a rough price.

AMD and Intel used to leapfrog one another but for the last year AMD has been ahead. AMD 64 if you want a fast PC for most things, AMD opteron or FX-64 for image and video editing. AMD Dual core if you run two high end programes at the same time or if you use 3D Software. AMD Sempron is a budget CPU that is enough for office tasks and ok at image editing its faster than Intel Celeron.
