I had, thanks. They list 7 examples. Of those, 1 doesn't load, 3 are French (though 1 of them is pretty good), 1 had multiple 404s on images, 1 is very uninspiring, 1 is okay but using an outdated version. Is that's they best they can come up with it doesn't bode well.

It is to help convince a client that it could be a good choice!
Ah I see, and the client doesn't understand that it's actually irrelevant what existing shops there are that use a platform? That's something I often see too, clients don't realise that with most ecommerce platforms you can theme them to look however you want.

What's important from their point of view is a whole load of other things like:
    • Size of the support community
    • Number, price and quality of extensions
    • Future of the platform
    • Code quality of the platform
    • Performance of the platform
    • Features of the platform
    • Flexibility of the platform
    • Ease of development of the platform (as harder means developers will cost more and spend longer doing the same tasks)

As I said, there are other legitimate reasons to choose Prestashop as the platform. However, it's one thing telling them that it can be made to look good, but it requires a leap of faith on their part when they cannot be given a single example! Though I have one that will do. This is where Shopify and Squarespace are making inroads I think. Whatever the pros and cons of using the hosted providers, the client can see many examples of great looking shops!

I think you're spot on. You could always design it first before choosing a platform. That way the client will know the platform choice doesn't affect the design.
