Press Release - problems??

Just had an idea.

Been emailed some info as to how people are now stealing cars - it's a friendly email meant to help you to avoid the scam.

If I were to modify it slightly and issue it as a press release, it would get people's attention and draw it to my website.

Would this be a problem though?

1. Would the original author be annoyed that i'd 'stolen' or 'borrowed' his work?

2. If it turned out to be false info, could i be sued??

Any advice much appreciated.

I'm not sure of the legal implications of this. However, what I would do, is source this news story on the internet, and then from this build a press release.

At least that way you'll know if the facts are genuine, and if they're 'newsworthy'.

I would strongly advise against issuing a "press release" containing information that is unverified. First, do as Andrew suggests: check the facts, make sure they're correct, and make sure they're newsworthy. You will need to do this before you even think about writing a press release.

Secondly, I don't know who you've received this email from, whether it's a friend or another company/official body etc, but rather than "modifying it slightly" I'd advise you to completely rewrite it to avoid problems with copyright etc.

Right-o.

That's what i thought really.

May be i could find a new news story that is not well-known and publicise it - or else create my own news!!

"Man jumps into bowl of custard from top of Ford Transit van!" - can see it now! Haha.

Thanks though guys - opinions appreciated!
