Premium Packaging Questions

Hi,

I'm in the process of setting my business and was wondering where to begin in terms of packaging design and finding a packaging supplier.

Should I look on LinkedIn for potential designers? My products are high end, branded luxury cosmetics so I'd like the packaging to reflect this. I imagine it to be reasonably simple design as I'm going for a clean, minimalistic look, similar to one used by glossybox below:

I'm thinking of a nice glossy box (various different sizes), that either has a sleeve fitted over it for posting out or it could be sent out within another postal box.

I've spoken with a couple of packaging companies at trade shows and their prices seem to start at £3 per box which would have quite an impact on my margins. I've looked on alibaba at the possibility of buying from China but I'm sceptical about the quality and whether prices could be achieved once the shipping and other costs have been factored in. I'm guessing their min order is quite large - something I'm trying to avoid in the early stages before I know whether the business will be a success.

Any help with these questions would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Do you want quality, or do you want cheap?

Boxes like the ones pictured, with print are going to be minimum of £2-3 in any volume less than 10,000, depending on size.

We have similar ones, using a silk black box with silver print which we sourced from The Tiny Box Company www.tinybox.co.uk. They are excellent quality but obviously you pay for it.

Thanks for the replies..its go to be quality every time so I guess buying from overseas is not the way forward! Just had a look at tiny box company, looks really good and prices are reasonable for small quantities - this may be the best option for my new start-up.

Hi there,
I may be able to help you, can you tell me what sort of quantity you were looking to buy? If you'd like to send me your email address or phone number I'd be happy to discuss the options with you.
Kind Regards

Quickpacksupplies

Why not a different approach with maybe a pillow box and then the product is wrapped up by tissue paper its far more cost effective.

Unless your selling a top quality unique brand that no one else can offer the expense of a box is going to hit you hard. Especially if a competitor can save 3 pound and undercut you by having a 'smarter' way of packaging.
You might not like to hear this but you have to start cheap and sacrifice a little more when starting out as your market appearance and trust is nowhere near the likes of Harrods 'yet'. Get a loyal and high number of customers returning and joining then you can look at improving your brand, customers won't mins paying an extra 1-2 pound if they have bought from you before and got a decent experience.

What exactly is it, that you are packaging so I can have a think of how you can save a bit of money.
