Hi everyone,

Just looking for a bit of info on the cost of PR

I've got a new site launching in a couple of weeks and the sites I will be competing with are featured regularly in national media (womens glossies).

I've put together a brief outlining my target market, the goals, my competition and a bit about my website but have not included a budget as I genuinely have no idea what the costs of PR are.

Thinking weekly press releases to relevant press, Digital PR & help with Social Media campaigns

Just looking for ball park kind of figures to help me set some kind of budget

If anyone can help that would be amazing, I've been trawling the internet for days for info with no luck!!

Thanks

It all depends on how much knowledge and experience you have and what time you have available, as you can generally do a lot of PR yourself, but in exactly the same way you can generally do most residential plumbing yourself, you have to know what you're doing.

You could write press releases yourself, get in touch with editors in magazines and newspapers, setup and implement your own blogging and social media strategy and it wouldn't cost you a penny.

But, the results could be minimal at best.

With PR / marketing, you'll generally get out what you put in and so if you invest little, your returns will be little. Invest £5,000 and you'll see substantially greater returns.

Without looking at exactly what you're wanting to do, it's difficult to put a price on it, but I would say to invest what you can in hiring the services of a professional. Whether that's £100 on a press release distribution service or a few thousand pounds on an agency, chances are you don't have the time to invest in PR, so pass as much as you can to a professional.

I hired a PR Agency a while back and must say the results were good overall.

Also have done some media work myself and that worked too, but a lot of success has to do with the biz idea, an untrendy biz/website won't do well in national media for instance. Businesses think they'll end up on TV, the majority never do! most do not make the national press, nor get feature stories.

Non-pure web/service businesses tend to be more of a community interest angle eg: the local cafe, which is for local press, so that's a good place to start.

I want to echo comments about hiring the professionals - this is often the best route for busy biz owners, in particular those who don't know the SP of Public Relations. Costs can be from £3000 per campaign - to £7k and beyond. Also, dont forget the agencies will have a giant list of established contacts that you just dont have.... so its worth bearing in mind.

Thanks for your advice guys.

I'll definitely be leaving pretty much all PR activities to my chosen agency

I'm still really struggling to find a way of coming up with a suitable budget though and don't really want to send my brief out to agencies without one

Very cheeky but is there anyone working in PR with a little spare time to have a nosey at my brief and let me know what they think the monthly cost would be and to see if my brief is ok

Cheers
